Too often we have been asked to celebrate the occasion, especially among the youth. Yet healthy discourse is curtailed and free media is controlled by the few in order to protect the interests of the powerful. In fact, a free environment that should have emerged from our sacred oath of Independence has been replaced with numerous laws that bind the people, the students and workers, continuing the mischievous strategy of our colonizers in the past to curtail the freedom and livelihood of the people.
Therefore, to celebrate our independence we must think with an open mind as a free and dignified nation. This was the core to our Declaration of Independence on 31 August 1957 and the idea of Malaysia in 1963 ¡V to create a liberal and democratic nation, to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law and to guarantee freedom and justice for the people.
